DRUMBRUTE USER GUIDE | ECOSYSTEM Manuals

Arturia DrumBrute (Original) — The Ultimate User's Guide Oct 12, 2026 · @Randy Chabot Overview The DrumBrute (2016) is a fully analog, fully polyphonic drum machine: 17 drum and percussion voices on 12 velocity-sensitive pads, a 64-step / 64-pattern sequencer with song mode, and a two-mode Steiner-Parker output filter. Every voice can play at once, and every sound control is a knob on the front panel. This guide covers the original DrumBrute (including the black and Creation editions), not the smaller DrumBrute Impact, which has 10 voices and a different feature set. | Spec | Value | | --- | --- | | Voices | 17 analog: Kick 1, Kick 2, Snare, Clap, Tom Hi/Lo, Conga Hi/Lo, Closed Hat, Open Hat, Rim, Clave, Maracas, Tambourine, Cymbal, Reverse Cymbal, Zap | | Pads | 12, velocity-sensitive (5 pads hold two voices each) | | Sequencer | 4 banks × 16 patterns = 64 patterns, up to 64 steps each | | Songs | 16, each chaining up to 16 patterns | | Time divisions | 1/8, 1/8T, 1/16 (default), 1/16T, 1/32 | | Tempo | 30–300 BPM, fine-tune to 0.01 BPM | | Filter | Steiner-Parker, 12 dB, low-pass or high-pass, with bypass | | Swing / Randomness | 50–75% / 0–100%, global or per track | | Outputs | Mix (1/4" unbalanced), 11 individual instrument outs (Closed and Open Hat share one) + metronome out, all 3.5 mm unbalanced, headphones (1/4" and 3.5 mm) | | Sync & MIDI | USB-MIDI (class compliant), 5-pin MIDI In/Out, Clock In/Out (3.5 mm) | | Power | 12 V DC, included adapter only; not USB-powered | | Size / weight | 418 × 276 × 40 mm (16.46 × 10.87 × 1.58 in), 2.58 kg (5.69 lb) | Sources: Arturia overview, Arturia details, DrumBrute manual v1.0. Five channels are shared, with an instrument select button that toggles which voice the pad plays and records: Tom Hi/Conga Hi, Tom Lo/Conga Lo, Cymbal/Reverse Cymbal, Rim/Clave, and Maracas/Tambourine. Both voices of a shared channel share its knobs and its individual output. Knob moves are not recorded into patterns. Metronome, Mute/Solo, Shift | Control | What it does | | --- | --- | | Metronome On | Click while running; hold On + Step 1/8 to 1/32 for the click rate (none lit = 1/4) | | Metro Volume | Click level | | Mute / Solo | One global Mute group and one Solo group, set by tapping pads | | Shift | Secondary functions (see Shift chart under Sequencer) | Rear panel | Jack | Notes | | --- | --- | | Power switch, strain-relief T-bar, 12 V DC | Loop the cable around the T-bar so it can't pull out mid-set | | USB | MIDI to/from computer, MIDI Control Center, firmware; does not power the unit | | MIDI In / Out | 5-pin DIN; notes and clock | | Clock In / Out | 3.5 mm; TS = clock only, TRS = clock + start/stop | | 11 instrument outs + Metronome out | 3.5 mm; plugging in removes that channel from the mix and headphones | | Mix out | 1/4" unbalanced | | Headphone level | Recessed push-push knob; push to release, push again to lock | | Headphones | 1/4" and 3.5 mm, same signal as Mix | Connections & first setup Power it from the included 12 V adapter, run the Mix out to your mixer or interface, and save often: unsaved pattern edits are lost on power-off, bank change or switching to Song mode. 1. Note the serial number and unlock code on the bottom sticker (photograph it), then register the unit at Arturia. 2. Connect the 12 V DC adapter, loop the cable around the strain-relief T-bar, and switch on. 3. Patch the 1/4" Mix out to a line input. Headphones use the rear recessed level knob, not Master Volume. 4. Connect USB to your computer for MIDI and MIDI Control Center. The unit still needs the adapter. 5. Install MIDI Control Center, click Recall From to back up the factory patterns, then update to firmware 1.2.1.0 if you're on an older version. 6. Set Sync to INT (white LED) to run standalone, or to USB, MIDI or CLK to follow an external clock. Individual outputs Each instrument channel has a 3.5 mm out (Closed and Open Hat share one), plus a separate metronome out. Plugging a cable in removes that channel from both the Mix and headphone outputs, and its Level knob then sets its output level (Master Volume no longer applies). Shared channels share one jack, so Rim and Clave, for example, always come out together. Practical splits for recording: Kick 1, Kick 2, Snare and Clap to their own tracks; leave hats, toms and percussion on the Mix. Use 3.5 mm-to-1/4" TS cables or a 3.5 mm breakout snake. Metronome routing With headphones plugged in, the click is removed from the Mix out but stays in the headphones, so you can monitor a click without printing it. Plug into the Metronome out to remove it from both. The metronome out can also trigger external gear as a rhythmic pulse. Example setups | Setup | Connections | DrumBrute Sync | | --- | --- | --- | | Standalone / master | Mix out to mixer; MIDI Out or Clock Out to other gear | INT | | DAW master | USB to computer; DAW sends MIDI clock | USB | | Hardware MIDI master | Master's MIDI Out to DrumBrute MIDI In | MIDI | | Volca / Pocket Operator / modular | 3.5 mm cable to Clock In; set rate in MCC (2PPQ for Volca, 1step for modular) | CLK | | Vintage DIN sync | DIN-to-3.5 mm TRS cable to Clock In; rate 24PPQ | CLK | Sound design Every voice is shaped by its own knobs, and the Steiner-Parker filter shapes the whole mix. Knob positions are not stored with patterns, so photograph or note a kit you like. | Instrument | Controls | Starting points | | --- | --- | --- | | Kick 1 | Level, Pitch, Decay, Impact, Sweep | The tunable, booming kick: long Decay + low Pitch + some Sweep for 808-style subs; high Impact for click | | Kick 2 | Level, Pitch, Decay | Shorter, punchier 909-leaning kick; layer under Kick 1 for weight + attack | | Snare | Level, Snap Level, Snap Decay, Snap Tone, Drum Tone | Snap controls the noise; Drum Tone the body. Low Snap Level = tom-like; high Snap + short decay = tight and cutting | | Clap | Level, Tone, Decay | Long Decay for a roomy clap; pair with Snare on 2 and 4 | | Closed Hat | Level, Pitch, Decay | Independent from Open Hat; short decay for tick, longer for shaker feel | | Open Hat | Level, Pitch, Decay | Detune slightly from Closed Hat for a two-hat kit | | Tom Hi / Conga Hi | Level, Pitch (shared) | Retuning the tom also retunes the conga | | Tom Lo / Conga Lo | Level, Pitch (shared) | Pitch up for bongo-like percussion | | Cymbal / Reverse Cymbal | Level, Tone, Decay (shared) | Reverse Cymbal swells into the beat; trigger it a step or two before a downbeat | | Rim / Clave | Level, Rim Tone (shared) | Ghost rimshots under the snare add groove | | Maracas / Tambourine | Level, Tamb Decay (shared) | Tambourine with long decay can stand in for an open hat | | Zap | Level, Pitch, Decay | Laser blips; low Pitch + short Decay for percussive thuds | Output filter The 12 dB Steiner-Parker filter sits on the Mix and headphone outputs. HPF lit = high-pass, dark = low-pass; Bypass toggles it. Filter moves are not saved with patterns. - Low-pass build: start Cutoff around 10 o'clock and open it over 8–16 bars into a drop. - High-pass breakdown: HPF on, raise Cutoff to thin out the kicks, then hit Bypass on the downbeat to slam the low end back in. - Resonance past halfway gets aggressive; with a kick-heavy mix it can howl, so ride the Master Volume. - Voices patched to individual outs bypass the filter, so keep anything you want filtered on the Mix. Kit recipes | Style | Approach | | --- | --- | | Techno | Kick 1 short-medium decay, mid Impact; Closed Hat tight; Clap long decay; Rim on offbeats; light Randomness on hats | | House | Kick 2 punchy; Open Hat on offbeats; Clap on 2 and 4; Tambourine 16ths with Swing 54–58% on that track | | Hip-hop / trap | Kick 1 long decay low Pitch (808 boom); Snare high snap; Closed Hat rolls with Step Repeat 3 and 4 | | Experimental | Zap and Reverse Cymbal with Polyrhythm; Randomness 30%+; resonant HPF sweeps | Sequencer The DrumBrute holds 64 patterns (banks A–D × 16), each up to 64 steps, with tempo, time division, swing, randomness and polyrhythm stored per pattern. Save + Ptrn after every edit you want to keep. Selecting banks and patterns - Bank: press Bank, then Step 1–4 (A–D). Then press Ptrn and choose Step 1–16. - Pattern: in Ptrn mode, press Step 1–16. While running, it switches instantly or at the end of the pattern, depending on Wait to Load Pattern in MCC. - Changing bank or entering Song mode discards unsaved edits in the current bank. Recording in real time 1. Select an empty pattern; turn on the metronome if you want a click. 2. Press Record, then Play. Step LEDs chase the playhead; Tap Tempo flashes. You can't change patterns while recording. 3. Play pads. Notes quantize to the time division; play again on a step to replace it. 4. Press Record while looping to drop in or out; Stop ends playback. 5. Hold Erase and tap a pad during record to spot-erase that drum where you hear it. 6. Shift + Record toggles non-quantized recording, which keeps notes within ±50% of the step. 7. Save + Ptrn. Step and Accent editing Tap a pad to select its track (Shift + pad while recording, so you don't add a hit). Press Step, then toggle steps: dark = empty, blue = note, red = accent. In Accent mode, new steps enter as red accents. Accent velocity is set in MCC (Accent Velocity Threshold). Pattern length - Under 16 steps: hold Last Step, press the Step button for the final step. - Longer: hold Last Step, press » until the white LED sits over 32/48/64, press the last Step button. - Copy and append: Shift + » copies the first 16 steps (or the whole pattern, if shorter) onto the end. - Pattern Follow: press « and » together so the Step buttons follow playback across groups. - Edit steps 17–32: turn Pattern Follow off, press » once. Time division Hold Shift and press Step 1–5 for 1/8, 1/8T, 1/16 (default), 1/16T or 1/32. This doubles, halves or triplets the pattern without retyping it. Step Repeat and shift timing - Step Repeat (Step mode): hold a lit Step button and slide on the strip to subdivide that step into 2, 3 or 4 hits — triplet rolls without changing the pattern's division. - Shift timing: in Step mode, hold a lit Step button and turn Swing; −1 to −50 moves the hit earlier, +1 to +50 later (percent of a step). Push a snare late for laid-back feel. Polyrhythm Shift + Step 16 (lit blue) lets each track loop at its own length. Select a track, hold Last Step and press a Step button for that track's length. A 3-step Kick 1, 4-step Kick 2 and 5-step Snare drift against each other for a long, evolving cycle. Copy and erase | Task | Steps | | --- | --- | | Copy pattern within bank | Select source → Copy → Ptrn → target Step | | Copy pattern to another bank | Select source → Copy → Ptrn → Bank → bank Step → Ptrn → target Step | | Copy bank to bank | Bank → source Step → Copy → Bank → target Step (overwrites all 16) | | Copy drum track, same pattern | Copy → source pad → (select shared voice) → target pad | | Copy drum track, other pattern | Copy → source pad → Ptrn → target Step → target pad; then Shift + Ptrn to load it | | Erase pattern / bank | Erase → Ptrn or Bank → Step (no undo) | | Erase drum track | Erase → pad | | Erase song | Erase → Song → song Step | Shift chart | Shift + | Function | | --- | --- | | Step 1–5 | Time division | | Step 9 | Strip mode during playback: lit = Roller, dark = Looper | | Step 14 | Wait to Load Pattern on/off | | Step 15 | Global BPM on/off | | Step 16 | Polyrhythm on/off for this pattern | | Pad | Select track without triggering | | Rate/Fine | Fine tempo (.00–.99) | | Swing | Shift all steps of the selected track (quick fix after unquantized recording) | | Record | Quantize off/on | | Mute / Solo | Clear Mute / Solo group | | » / « | Extend / shorten pattern | | Bank / Ptrn / Song | Revert to last saved state | Performance features The filter, Looper strip, Mute/Solo, Swing and Randomness can all be used at once while a pattern or song plays — that's where the DrumBrute shines live. Swing Turn Swing from 50% (straight) up to 75% (max). It delays every second step. Press Current Track to swing only the selected instrument; a later global move raises tracks with their own swing by the same amount (capped at 75%). Toggle Current Track off on each track to return to one global value. Randomness 0–100%. Varies which steps play, their accents and rhythm. Use Current Track for per-instrument randomness: 10–20% on hats or percussion gives human variation; 60%+ on everything turns the pattern to chaos. Roller (while recording) Hold a finger on the strip and hit a pad to record a roll at 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 (triplets when the pattern division is triplet). It can't roll finer than the pattern's division. Looper (while playing) Touch the strip to loop a slice of the pattern, 1/4 (longest) to 1/32 (shortest), starting from where playback is when you touch. Slide to change length; while holding, press a Step button to jump the loop start. Release to resume; in Song mode playback carries on underneath, so you land where you would have been. Shift + Step 9 (lit) switches the strip to Roller mode during playback: hold the strip and hit pads to roll them live without recording. Mute and Solo Press Mute (or Solo), tap pads to add them to the group, press the button again to toggle the group on/off. Shift + Mute/Solo clears the group. Groups are global across patterns and are not saved through power-off. Shared voices mute independently via their select button. Song mode 16 songs, each up to 16 pattern slots from any bank. 1. Press Song, choose a song with a Step button. 2. Press Record (Ptrn and Record blink). 3. Press Step buttons in playback order; repeat a button to repeat a pattern. Press Bank → A–D → Ptrn to pull from other banks. 4. Press Record to finish, then Save + Song. Songs loop until stopped. Each pattern brings its own tempo unless Global BPM (Shift + Step 15) is on — turn it on for live sets so tempo doesn't jump. Pause vs restart In MCC, Pause mode sets whether Play resumes from the current position or restarts from step 1. Restart is handy for dropping back in on the one. Sync & MIDI Press Sync (while stopped) to cycle INT, USB, MIDI and CLK. On INT the DrumBrute is master and sends clock to MIDI Out, USB and Clock Out; on any other setting it follows that source and forwards its clock to all three outputs. Master vs. slave | | Master (INT) | Slave (USB / MIDI / CLK) | | --- | --- | --- | | Tempo | Rate/Fine, Shift + Rate/Fine, Tap Tempo | Set on the master; Tap Tempo disabled | | Transport | Runs the sequencer, sends Start/Stop (MIDI or MMC, set in MCC) | Front-panel transport still works; you can record | | Clock out | Generated internally | Passes through the incoming clock | | Range | 30–300 BPM | Not guaranteed outside 30–300 BPM | Clock In/Out | Rate | Use it for | Notes | | --- | --- | --- | | 48PPQ | Best accuracy between Arturia/compatible gear | Arturia's recommended rate | | 24PPQ | DIN sync (TR-606/808-era Roland, etc.) | Default in firmware 1.2 | | 2PPQ | Korg Volca, Pocket Operators | Use only if the device needs it | | 1step | Modular, one pulse per step | Use only if the device needs it | Use a 3.5 mm TS cable for clock only, or TRS for clock plus start/stop. Set the rate in MCC. MIDI - USB-MIDI is class compliant; no driver needed. - Pads send MIDI notes (option in MCC) and the sequencer plays the voices from incoming notes per the Drum Map; recording from external MIDI captures only mapped notes. - Set the global MIDI channel and each instrument's note in MCC's Device Settings and Drum Map. Match your DAW drum rack or controller to those notes. - Local Control off makes pads send MIDI only, without triggering the voices. - The touch strip sends and responds to a CC (number set in MCC): 0–24 off, 25–49 = 1/4, 50–74 = 1/8, 75–99 = 1/16, 100–127 = 1/32. Automate it from a DAW to record Looper/Roller moves. - Stop pressed three times quickly sends All Notes Off. MIDI Control Center settings worth knowing | Setting | What it changes | | --- | --- | | MIDI Channel | Global channel for notes, CC and transport | | Clock In/Out rate | 1step, 2PPQ, 24PPQ, 48PPQ | | Tap Tempo | Number of taps averaged | | Global BPM | Same as Shift + Step 15 | | Wait to Load Pattern | Switch now vs. at pattern end (also Shift + Step 14) | | Accent Velocity Threshold | MIDI velocity used for accented steps | | Pads send MIDI notes / Local Control | Controller behaviour | | Metronome | Click rates incl. 1/4T | | Step Repeat Randomizer / Probability | Lets Randomness add step repeats | | Pause mode | Play resumes vs. restarts | | Next bank | Switch bank without picking a pattern | | Roller/Looper mode + CC | Strip behaviour during playback | | Transport | MIDI Start/Stop or MMC | | Drum Map | MIDI note per instrument | In firmware 1.2 MCC has no live sync for the DrumBrute: use Recall From to pull all 64 patterns to the computer, edit, then Store To (or drag a single pattern onto Working Memory) to send them back. Store To overwrites the unit's memory, so recall first. Full backups save as .drumbrute (patterns + settings); settings alone export as .drumbrute\ds. Firmware, maintenance & troubleshooting The latest DrumBrute firmware is 1.2.1.0 (February 2017), installed with MIDI Control Center 1.23.0.134 (June 2026, macOS 11+ / Windows 10+). Back up before updating. Updating firmware 1. Download the .led firmware file and the current MIDI Control Center from Arturia's DrumBrute resources page (links below). 2. Power the DrumBrute from its adapter and connect USB directly to the computer — not through a cheap hub, which causes "Failed to open the device" errors. 3. Open MCC, select DrumBrute, and click Recall From to back up all 64 patterns. Export Device Settings too. 4. Use MCC's firmware upgrade button, choose the .led file, and don't touch the unit or cable until it finishes and restarts. 5. Check settings in Device Settings; re-import your .drumbrute\ds file if they reset. Care - Use only the included 12 V supply; others can damage the unit. - Unplug USB before cleaning; use a soft, dry cloth, no solvents or sprays. - Keep vents clear and the unit out of direct sun or heat. - Opening the case voids the warranty. Troubleshooting | Symptom | Fix | | --- | --- | | Lost a pattern after power-off or bank change | It wasn't saved. Save + Ptrn (or Save + Bank) after edits; Shift + Ptrn reverts to the saved version | | Play does nothing | Sync isn't INT and no external clock is running; press Sync (while stopped) until INT lights | | Tap Tempo ignored | Only works on INT sync | | A voice is missing from the mix | A cable is in its individual out, it's muted/soloed (Shift + Mute/Solo to clear), or its Level is down | | Click missing from Mix out | Headphones are plugged in, which moves the click to headphones only | | Master Volume doesn't affect a drum | That voice is patched to its individual out; use its Level knob | | Filter has no effect | Bypass is on, or the voice is on an individual out | | Pattern changes late | Wait to Load Pattern is on (Shift + Step 14) | | Tempo jumps between patterns | Turn on Global BPM (Shift + Step 15) | | Swing/Randomness won't go back to normal | Turn Current Track off on each track | | Retuning one voice changed another | Shared channels share knobs (e.g., Tom Hi/Conga Hi) | | Stuck notes on external gear | Press Stop three times quickly | | Sloppy sync with other gear | Use 48PPQ or 24PPQ; avoid 1step/2PPQ unless required | | MCC can't see the unit | Unit must be powered from its adapter; use a direct USB port or quality cable | | External MIDI notes not recording | Note numbers don't match the Drum Map | Tips, tricks & workflows The habits that matter most: save constantly, back up to MCC, turn on Global BPM for live sets, and photograph your knob settings, since kits aren't stored. Workflow habits - Save + Ptrn after every edit worth keeping; Shift + Ptrn is your undo back to the last save. - Recall From in MCC at the end of each session, and rename the template by date or project. - Keep bank A for works in progress, B–C for finished sets, D for experiments. - Write tempo and kit notes into the template name, e.g. "Techno 132 - long kick". Groove - Push snares and claps late with shift timing (+5 to +15) for a laid-back feel; pull hats early (−5) for urgency. - Record hats unquantized, then Shift + Swing to tighten the whole track if it's too loose. - Per-track swing on hats or tambourine only keeps kicks and snares straight while the top end shuffles. - 10–15% per-track Randomness on percussion gives variation without wrecking the kick. - Accent only a few steps (e.g., offbeat open hats) so they stand out. Pattern tricks - Use 1/16T or 1/8T time division for shuffles and 12/8 feels; 1/32 for double-time hats. - Polyrhythm with 3, 5 and 7-step percussion tracks over a 16-step kick for evolving techno loops. - Step Repeat 3 on the last hat step before a downbeat for instant trap rolls. - Fire the Reverse Cymbal one or two steps before a section change for a swell. - Build variations fast: Copy → Ptrn → next slot, then edit only the fill steps. - Shift + » duplicates a 16-step idea to 32, 48, then 64 steps for variations at the end. Live performance - Global BPM on; Wait to Load Pattern on so changes land on the bar. - Set up a Mute group (e.g., everything but kick and hats) and toggle it for instant breakdowns. - Hold the Looper on 1/8 or 1/16 for stutters, then release on the downbeat. - High-pass sweep up with Resonance around 1 o'clock, then hit Bypass to drop the low end back in. - Ride the Randomness encoder up during a build and snap it back to zero for the drop. Studio - Patch Kick 1, Kick 2, Snare and Clap to individual outs to compress and EQ them separately; leave the rest on the Mix (which keeps the filter). - Send the Clap's individual out through a reverb or delay pedal, back to its own channel. - Run the Mix out through overdrive or a compressor for extra punch. - Sequence the DrumBrute from your DAW over USB using the Drum Map notes, or record its patterns as MIDI from the pads. - Use the metronome out as a trigger for modular or for sidechain pumping. - Clock Volcas or Pocket Operators from Clock Out at 2PPQ, with the DrumBrute as master. Links Arturia's DrumBrute resources page is the one link to bookmark: it carries the current manual, firmware and MIDI Control Center. Owners on KVR describe the original DrumBrute as no longer sold new, so used buyers should check that every noise-based voice (maracas, clap, hats, snare snap) works — owners report a noise-circuit fault on some early serial numbers.
