Chapter 1: What Performance Really Means “Premature optimization is the root of all evil.” — Donald Knuth This quote is often repeated, but frequently misunderstood. Knuth was not arguing against optimization. He was arguing against optimizing before understanding where performance problems actually exist. High-performance software engineering is the discipline of making programs run faster, use fewer resources, scale better, and behave more predictably. To do that effectively, we first need to understand what "performance" actually means. Most beginners define performance as: How fast a program runs. Professional systems engineers know that this is only one small part of the story. --- 1.1 The Many Dimensions of Performance Performance is not a single metric.
