Part I — Understanding GCC as a compiler platform

GCC is more than a collection of language compilers. It is a mature, production grade infrastructure for translating high level programming languages into executable machine instructions across different architectures, operating systems, and application binary interfaces.

For compiler engineers, GCC is particularly valuable because its implementation connects almost every major subject in compiler construction: parsing, type systems, control flow analysis, dataflow analysis, static single assignment, interprocedural optimization, instruction selection, vectorization, register allocation, scheduling, and formal correctness.

This guide assumes proficiency in C and C++, familiarity with assembly language, and a working understanding of operating systems and computer architecture. It is designed for engineers who want to contribute to GCC itself, build custom compiler passes, develop architecture specific back ends, or investigate advanced code generation.
